2 MB or 10 MB? The e-Visa portal's upload instructions say the photo must be under 2 MB, but one line elsewhere in the same system says "file size ≤ 10 MB". Keep your file under 2 MB and it meets both. The portal's instructions are also available in Chinese.

Use the right visa for your trip

The Chinese Embassy in Vietnam warns that Decree 282/2025/ND-CP, in force since 15 December 2025, sets higher fines: working illegally or overstaying by 90–180 days can cost 15–20 million dong, and a visa whose purpose does not match what you actually do can cost 20–25 million dong. Apply for the visa type that matches your trip.

Applying for a Vietnam e-Visa

Apply on the official portal, evisa.gov.vn, uploading your portrait photo and your passport data page. Check every detail before you submit, because errors can lead to your application being refused.

China's consular service says PRC diplomatic, official and 公务普通 passports can enter Vietnam visa-free for up to 90 days, but ordinary passport holders generally need to get a visa first. Its page was offline for maintenance when we checked in October 2026, so confirm with your travel agency or the portal before you travel.

Can you use your Chinese passport photo?

Not as it is. A Chinese passport photo is 33 × 48 mm and may show clear glasses, while the Vietnam e-Visa wants a 4 × 6 cm photo with no glasses. Crop a new 2:3 copy from the original photo, or take a new one without glasses. See the photo size chart.

How to get your Vietnam e-Visa photo right

  1. Take a new photo on white. Face the camera directly, in formal clothes, with no hat and no glasses.
  2. Crop it to 4 × 6 cm. Keep the 2:3 shape and save it as a JPG or JPEG under 2 MB. If the file is not a JPG, such as a HEIC photo from an iPhone, convert it with the free 123PhotoTool JPEG converter.
  3. Scan your passport data page. Upload one clear image of the page, with all four corners visible.
  4. Apply on the official portal. Upload both files at evisa.gov.vn and check every detail before you submit.
